Early Registration of Marriage (Ontario)

Anyone who wants to have their marriage legally recognized must have their marriage registered by the Registrar’s office. How is this process done? Before your marriage, you must complete the marriage license application. After the application form has been completed, you have to take it to an Ontario municipal office. Along with the form, both parties should bring their identification that shows their age and status in Canada (citizenship card, birth certificate, permanent resident card, or immigration document). At the municipal office, you will proceed to purchase a marriage license. After you have purchased the marriage license, you will have three months to get married before the license expires. After three months you have to get a new one if you still want to get married. Please come to see us once you’ve obtained your Marriage License and before you get married.
After the marriage ceremony, the person who performed the marriage will send the marriage license to the Office of the Registrar General of Ontario to be registered. According to the Office of the Registrar General, it will take about ten weeks for the marriage to be registered. The newlywed couple will receive a Record of Solemnization of Marriage. This document is not a marriage certificate. After you have received a notice that your marriage is registered you can apply for your marriage certificate.
What is the Early Registration of Marriage? This is the process where the marriage registration is processed faster than the ten weeks it currently takes. We can help you to obtain this registration and marriage certificate in about two weeks, with proof of urgency. Why would someone need to go through the early registration of marriage? The main reason why someone would need the registration expedited is if they need to adjust their or their spouse's status in Canada on an urgent basis. For example, a foreigner who has a pending deportation order would need the marriage certificate in order to prevent (or at least delay) the deportation. Also, someone who is in Canada and whose status is set to expire could extend their status with the marriage certificate. Other reasons for obtaining an Early Registration of Marriage include obtaining employment in another country and relocating to another country. The process is expedited when there is valid pressing urgency where someone would need the marriage certificate very quickly. Remember, in order to qualify for the early registration of marriage, you must have a pressing issue. One cannot qualify for this process just because one wants it.
