What is the difference between NEXUS and CANPASS Air?
CANPASS is a program by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) designed to expedite border clearance when coming into Canada.
NEXUS is a partnership between CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection used to expedite the border clearance when coming into Canada or the United States.
Applying for a NEXUS card
The fee for applying or renewing an already existing membership is $50.00 USD or free of charge for children under the age of 18, who are admitted into the NEXUS program. The application may be processed in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. Eligible applicants will be later contacted to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center (click here for locations in Canada and the United States). You will be interviewed by:
- A U.S. Customs and Border protection officer if you presently reside in Canada
- A Canada Border Services Agency officer if you reside in the U.S.
NOTE: Certificates Express will notify you if you are not eligible for the NEXUS service.
How can Certificates Express help?
Certificates Express can help you successfully complete the NEXUS card application process in order to apply for a NEXUS card for the first time or renew your existing membership. To be eligible to obtain a NEXUS card you must satisfy the program's eligibility requirements. You may be denied access into the program if you:
- Are not admissible to Canada or the United States under appropriate immigration laws
- Do not provide accurate or complete information in your application
- Have been found to be in violation of immigration or customs laws
- Have been convicted of a criminal offence for which you have not received a pardon in any country (for U.S. background checks, you can be questioned about your complete criminal history, including arrests and pardons, which may exclude you from NEXUS
- Fail to meet other requirements of NEXUS
You have to receive approval from both Canada and the United States to become a member of NEXUS.
Children under the age of 18 may apply for a NEXUS card with the consent of a parent or guardian. At the enrolment interview, children under the age of 18 have to be accompanied by at least one custodial parent or guardian (documents proving custody will be required).

Document Requirements
You need to provide photocopies of documents supporting your citizenship/residency status and admissibility, as well as a document demonstrating your current place of residence.
DO NOT send original documents with your application, as they will not be returned. Bring originals only to your interview, to be scheduled after your application is approved.

- Current passport
- Birth certificate with Photo ID
- Canadian citizenship certificate (with photo) or Citizenship card
- Certificate of Indian Status
- Work permit/Study permit
United States
- Current passport
- Birth certificate with Photo ID
- U.S. Citizenship certificate
- Certificate of naturalization
- Border crossing card
- Work permit/Study permit
Acceptable proof of residency status
Canada
- Valid permanent resident card
- Record of landing
United States
- Valid permanent resident card
Acceptable proof of current place of residence
Provide a photocopy of one of the following documents to show proof of your current place of residence:
- Current Driver's licence
- Other Provincial identification card
- Other Federal identification card
You may also include a photocopy of your car registration along with your application, if you plan to cross the Canadian-US border by land.
Non-custodial parents or guardians have to attach a copy of supporting documents such as letter of authorization or a court order, if the application is for a child which is not travelling with the custodial adult and is under 18 years of age.
Sending in your application
Certificates Express will complete, verify and forward your completed NEXUS application to the appropriate government agencies.
