England and Wales Certificates
For England and Wales, Certificates Express can only help you obtain a full certificate from the General Register Office (GRO), which is usually required for legal purposes and includes more information than a short certificate.
We will be able to obtain your certificate if you satisfy at least ONE of the following conditions:
- You have the GRO Reference number for the event for which the certificate is required
- You have the required information for this event (date of birth, death, marriage, name of person mentioned in the certificate, place where the event occured, etc)
If you are unsure about any details regarding the event, additional fees for searching undertaken by GRO staff may be incurred, as part of producing the required certificate.
GRO Index Reference
GRO uses Index Reference numbers to track where and when registered birth, marriage and death events, among others, occured. The GRO indexes are available in UK libraries, record offices or in several online services, some of which are free of charge. These online services include:
Processing times by the England and Wales authorities for the different service options we offer are:
- Within 4 working days of receipt for Standard service Full Certificate with a GRO number
- Within 15 working days of receipt for Standard service Full Certificate without a GRO number
- Next day provided order was taken or received before 4pm for Priority (urgent) service

For applications without a GRO index number, an additional charge may be required if no such event is found within 3 years of the supplied date by the GRO staff.
All of the information required for applying for this certificate will be obtained from you in our application package, which you can download after purchasing one of the services above. This information includes:
- Full name of person whose birth certificate is requested
- Date and place of the event
- GRO Reference number for this event (if known)
- Details about parents (if applicable)
